The Sisters of The Good Shepherd - Memorial Garden

Boroondara Cemetery - Kew, Melbourne

This perennial flower garden is a memorial to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd buried together here. Started in September 2017 as a collaboration between the Boroondara Cemetery Trust, Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Burke and Beyond, Michael Tanner, Rachel Stephenson, Su Laird, and Helen Page and continues in 2025. This project workes with young adults to develop confidence and skills in basic horticulture, winning a cemetery industry award for innovation in 2018.

To improve the disturbed and compacted clay soils for planting, and increase the water holding capacity, we added newspaper, compost and mulch. Drought hardy perennials and ornamental grasses were selected to withstand the dry Victorian summer with little to no additional watering. They add height, movement and interest and are very low maintenance.
