Bean Fence

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori O Tupoho - Castlecliff, Whanganui, New Zealand

The front basketball court fence provides a perfect climbing frame for summer Bean crops. Removing all Kikuyu grass roots we built a Macrocarpa edge to hold compost, planting Heritage Bean varieties for fresh eating as well as drying including Scarlet Runner Beans. Works began September 2022

Soaking Beans overnight to speed gemination we protect the emerging shoots from snails and slugs, with crushed eggshells. Non-toxic also a great way to recycle shells from wharekai (kitchen).

Thank you to the Port Employment Precint for supporting our project by donating the macrocarpa sleepers, and the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust for the beans.
