Holmesglen Institute Glen Waverley Campus - Melbourne

This high traffic area had become neglected and overgrown. As students are mainly on-site through winter the focus with this design was to showcase winter-flowering natives, and to create an informal seating area with boulders amongst the plantings. Design: Rachel Stephenson, Earthworks: Anton Beudal (I Can Dig That).

Works

Initial works removed (relocated) existing plantings. Thanks to Holmesglen landscaping apprentices for help, below. We removed existing builders fill and clay creating an informal seating area with boulders which could also hold the slope. Mulch and compost were added with plantings to improve soil and supress weeds.

Plant Selection

The site receives full western afternoon sun, so plants need to be very heat tolerant. Tree planting is of three Eucalyptus caesia ‘Silver Princess’, with flowering shrubs Guichenotia macrantha, Alyogyne hueglii, Hardenbergia ‘Regentand Chorizema cordatum. The climber Kennedia rubicunda is planted to cover the rear screen, Dampiera Diversifolia is the groundcover.
Visual access was needed beside the road where plantings were kept to a minimum with hardy shrub Cytisus scoparius ‘C.E Pearson’, and Pultanaea pendunculata as the groundcover.
